WHERE?
The areas detailed below are those covered by the project. Click on the links to see more details on each area.
Other protection status: The North Uist Machair SAC (UK0019804) and the North Uist Machair and Islands SPA (UK9001051) are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) under UK legislation. Both sites are within Baleshare and Kirkibost, Balranald Bog and Loch nam Feithean, Machairs Robach and Newton and Vallay SSSIs. The SPA area also includes Berneray, Boreray and Pabbay SSSIs.
These sites lie entirely within the North Uist Machair and Islands RAMSAR site.
Other protection status: The entire sub-area other than the Kilpheder to Smerclate SPA (UK9001083) is classified as SSSI under UK legislation. The individual SSSIs are Bornish and Ormiclate Machairs, Howmore Estuary, Lochs Roag and Fada, Loch Bee, Loch Bee Machair, Loch Druidibeg and Loch Hallan.
91% of the sub-area is within the South Uist Machair and Lochs RAMSAR site.
30% of the site is within the Loch Druidibeg National Nature Reserve.
Other protection status: A small (2.4%) section of the Coll (corncrake) SPA (UK9003033) is designated as a site of Special Scientific Interest under UK legislation (Crossapol and Gunna SSSI).
Other protection status according: The entire sub-area is classified as an SSSI under UK legislation (Oronsay and south Colonsay SSSI).
EU protection status: SPA Natura 2000 Code: UK9003057, SAC Natura 2000 Code: UK0030247
Please note that, although this sub-area incorporates both and SPA and an SAC, the project will target only SPA interests.
Other protection status: 40% of the area is within the Rinns of Islay RAMSAR site. The entire sub-area is designated as an SSSI under UK legislation (Rinns of Islay SSSI).
EU protection status: SPA Natura 2000 Code: UK9001741
Other protection status: A small (5.4%) section of the Ness block of the SPA is designated as an SSSI under UK legislation (Loch Stiapavat SSSI).
